My 1st Sushi Escapade....

Today i got my 1st hands-on sushi making.... Codename: "Project Vinegar Rice". Here are the line up of ingredients on display.

The most important ingredient: Calrose Rice

Big pieces of Seaweed

Eggs to make Tamago

Mayo filling for the California roll

Crab Stick main ingredient of the California roll

Cucumber as dressing for the California roll

Raw Prawns

Norwegian Salmon to make Nigiri sushi

Ok thats for the ingredients part. The pic below are the post production production process.

First is the rice cooking part: Put 2 cups of rice into the pot

Added 4 cups of water according to the instructions written on the back of the rice packaging. 2 cups for every 1 cup of rice added to the pot

Preparing the tamago: Break the eggs into a bowl

Added the rice wine, sugar, and soy sauce to the bowl.

Beat all the ingredients in the bowl to be poured into the pan later.

Without a proper rectangular pan and spatula this is the result

In an attempt to save the tamago. The layers are opened up and re-folded then cut to sushi size. Hmm not bad it didnt turn out so bad.

Next up is the prawns: Put the raw prawns in the pot and boil

Then it came to the salmon.... thats when disaster struck! in the attempt to fillet the salmon, the knife that i were using was blunt therefore spoiling the texture @_@ knowing that this cannot be saved the salmon is put into oven to be baked and to be served as extra ingredient to the California roll

Preparing the bamboo mat an essential tool to roll the sushi

At this point no picture is taken to protect viewers appetite.

To my horror the biggest failure of the night was not the salmon.... but the main ingredient itself.... The sushi rice was in a sticky state.... apparently too much water was added. But the show must go on.... with Malcolms help he poured the powdered vinegar into the rice and stirred it. Because of the sticky rice state it started to lump together =_= causing the vinegar powder and not be able to be mixed evenly. Because of this we end up only making california rolls with the sticky rice.

Well for a 1st timer i guess i still have a long way to go. I have identified the problems below as the factor for the culinary disaster:

1. Do not follow blindly instructions on preparing the rice. The correct water to rice ratio must be taken into consideration for different rice cookers.

2. Get liquid based sushi vinegar instead of power to be evenly mixed with the rice.

3. Proper equiptment needed. Rectangular pan and spatula needed for prepartion of tamago. Also a sharper fillet knife is needed to prepare the salmon or better yet get salmon that are already filleted.

In the end of the day it was pure fun its a good experience i would say. Im not giving up yet. Stay tuned for the second episode of "Sushi Escapades".
